Project overview

Money20/20 is a series of global Fintech conferences where attendees come to meet and do business. I joined the event app team to improve the networking proposition for an event in Vegas.

Customer needs

Attendees can use the app to set up meetings on site but were struggling to find and meet relevant people. They ended up relying on other products and channels to network at the event.

Problem statement

How can we increase the number of meaningful connections that happen at the event?

Success measure

20-25% meeting acceptance rate

Research

Quantitative data reporting
The product manager produced a data insights report to understand usage of the app in the previous event and to set the KPIs for the Vegas show.

Customer feedback survey
Collaborating with the research team I collected customer’s feedback on their pain points around the app.

User interviews
I conducted face to face interviews at the event to understand how customers plan their time and set up meetings before the show. This was a combination of pre arranged formal interviews and spontaneous discussions around the venue. I also created a video blog of my event experience. This was to share with the team to get a feel for the event experience.

Defining project scope

As a team we did a feature prioritisation exercise in order to decide which features we should work on to reach our goals. I used the insights I gained at the event to recommend to the product manager which features I thought would be most valuable.

We decided to tackle two main features to solve our problem statement which were:

  • Attendee filter

  • Meeting and chat integration

Feature prioritisation

Feature: Attendee filter

Attendees were struggling to find each other as there was not enough data surfaced in the search results. We aimed to give users more relevant information about each other in order to make a connection.

“75% of my reason for attending Money20/20 is to generate business. The list of people in the app is way too big. I need to do proper planning and outreach before the event”

Customer feedback

Understanding user data
By auditing all the explicit data we collected on attendees this allowed us to shape how they could search and filter for each other.

We also looked at existing behaviour by reviewing previous search terms. This was also an opportunity to improve our data reporting in the way that searching was conducted.

Sketching
I facilitated a co creation workshop with the team. The aim was to improve the content of attendees profiles to make them more discoverable. I presented the team with direct feedback from attendees about this feature so they could understand the pain points. We sketched out ideas which would allow users to customise their profiles. Together we agreed on a solution that would increase engagement by making the profiles more discoverable. I then turned these ideas into prototypes which we could test.

Stakeholder Insight
I worked closely with stakeholders to understand how users would be searching for each other. I also gained valuable insight about data protection.

Feature: Integrated meeting and chat

In order to increase the meeting acceptance rate we sought to simplify the journey by integrating meetings with attendee chat. I looked at best practice examples of conversational UX from Apple business chat and Facebook messenger.

“It was difficult to find people and confirm meetings...It never worked properly for meeting setup and you cannot see the profile of the person”.

User flows
By mapping the existing flow that users take I looked at opportunities to simplify the journey.

Prototyping
I created wireframes and prototypes with Sketch and UXPin which we could quickly and iteratively test with users.

Rapid Prototyping
I paired with a developer in order to validate this feature. We worked together to do rapid prototyping directly in the app and test it immediately with users. We both observed users testing the features and could iterate quickly from our learnings.

Outcome

Search:

  • Users can now filter the attendee list with ease

  • Attendee profiles are customisable and include more data

  • Improved data reporting to understand how attendees use this feature

New search results

Search filtering and new attendee profile

Chat and meet:

  • Users can now see if their meeting request has been read or received

  • There is a single place where users can see all of their scheduled meetings

  • Attendees can save meetings to their own device calendar

Promotional video

I worked with an animator to define the storyboard and art direction for a video to promote the networking proposition at the event. This was to highlight the improved features and give context to where attendees need to go when they have scheduled a meeting on site.
